- I have been convinced that USR only wants to support PC users, and
- that other uses are better support by other companies.
-
- Example 1 - capabilities:
- The latest features always come out in the PC internal modem
- first. 33.6k, voice, DSVD, all for PC users only.
-
- Example 2 - documentation;
- The online doc files are in Word 6 format. Sure a big help if you
- run UNIX, VMS, Amiga, etc. Of course it would take at least an hour
- of someone's time to make PostScript versions, compress them, and
- upload them.
-
- Oh, and some documents are in self extracting archives, although
- the reference port of zip/unzip available for UNIX and virtually
- every other O/S will unpack this.
-
- Example 3 - registration:
- Online registration is great, but only if you have a PC. I bought
- the first V.34 Sportster I could get, and am still unregistered
- because it isn't on or near a Windows machine. It took me several
- months to finally make someone understand that UNIX isn't a Windows
- app, and then they promised to send me a paper registration copy.
- It's been over a year, hasn't happened yet.
-
- In fairness, USR did send me free ROM upgrades anyway, but I
- wonder what offers and stuff I haven't been mailed because I'm a
- UNIX user. Between my office and clients there are over 50
- Sportsters, 100% unregistered.
-
- If USR cared about non-PC users they would include an ASCII text
- and/or Postscript version of the registration doc on the PC disk.
- Virtually everyone can read PC floppies, even if they can't run the
- programs, and I'll print the form and fax it myself. Maybe mail is
- just slow...
-
- Example 4 - Courier flash:
- Anyone see a script to download your Courier from UNIX or any
- other O/S? I just scanned the ftp site, and sure missed it. The only
- non-PC thing there is a UNIX script which minimal comments and which
- assumes ksh or bash, since it uses escape sequences in the 'echo'
- command.
-
- ================================================================
-
- Someone from USR want to tell me my perceptions are all wrong on
- this one?

- I will support laws and technology which limit what you are allowed
- to hear, if you will oppose laws and technology limiting what I am
- allowed to say.
